APR Tuning Products for the Porsche 997 - 911 Turbo

Current Lineup Information

The 997 Turbo debuted in February 2006 at the Geneva Motor Show. It uses a new front bumper with LED parking lights in a horizontal bar through the air intake. The fog lights are moved to the corners of the bumpers. Large air intakes in front of and behind the rear wheels are other obvious visual cues. The retractable rear wing is also one of the highlights, a feature which has been available on the 996 Turbo too.

The engine is reported to be based on the rugged and very reliable 964/GT1 design at 3.6 L with power output at 353 kW (480 PS) and 620 N·m (457 ft·lbf). The turbochargers will include BorgWarner's new Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), which uses guide vanes located in front of the turbine wheel that modulates inflow angle and speed. While the 911 Turbo is the first non-diesel production car to feature variable geometry turbines, a similar approach was used by Garrett Systems starting in 1989 with the Shelby CSX, that used variable nozzles instead. The optional Sport Chrono Package includes a temporary 2.9 psi overboost, upping peak torque to 680 N·m (502 ft·lbf) for ten second bursts.

According to official Porsche figures, it produces 480 hp (358 kW), accelerates 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds with the manual transmission, and a has 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of just 3.4 seconds with the manumatic Tiptronic S transmission, which is more than enough to edge out its current rival from Ferrari, the new F430. It has also recorded a 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds at the hands of US motoring publication Motor Trend—eclipsing all of its major competitors and even Porsche's own Carrera GT supercar. The 997 Turbo has a top speed of 311 km/h (193 mph).

Possibly one of the most astonishing feats of the Porsche 997 is its 40–60 mph (64–97 km/h) time. In second gear, it takes just 1 second. The car is also able to launch from 0-30 mph (48 km/h) in just 1.1 seconds.

"There is only one APR."
For over 10 years, no one has been able to simulate what APR's EMCS does. Our staff of 10 engineers and 30+ employees has broken the mold of "performance tuning" by developing new technology that allows for the development of the highest quality performance available. APR has revolutionized "chipping" with unparalleled innovation. There is only one performance engineering firm that offers software so refined and complete with so many options. There is only one APR.

"Extra steps must be taken."
From the development process to the technical features, no other tuner offers the same innovation and refinement that you'll get from APR. Many months have been spent developing the best chip available for the 997 Twin Turbo. We go far beyond the traditional steps of just "raising the boost" and "advancing the timing". Extra steps must be taken. Typical data logging software used by most tuners is capable of capturing 4 variables at 3 samples per second. APR's proprietary data acquisition software captures as many as 30 variables at around 22Hz. That's an incredible 55 times more data gathered per second.

"...extra steps other tuners can't take."
To dramatically increase power and maintain factory drivability there are many factors to be considered. One of note is the internal boost-controller, which requests boost according to load measured by the ECU. Inconsistencies and "surging" are things you will not feel in APR software because we properly match the cars actual boost produced with the load-based requested boost from the ECU. This is where "55 times more data" goes from intangible numbers to a smoothness you can feel. It helps duplicate the characteristics normally found only from the factory. Such precise matching you will not find in other software. These are extra steps other tuners can't take.

"...any tuner in any market anywhere in the world."
The APR 997 Twin Turbo upgraded chip comes EMCS equipped (Enhanced Modular Chipping System). The "extra steps" don't stop with the software development process. Our chipping hardware development far surpasses anything else offered by any tuner in any market anywhere in the world. We have left the traditional method of re-flashing a chip in the 90's and have moved on to the next generation of chip tuning. No longer are you limited to replacing one program with another program. With our EMCS, you can replace one program with four programs and several ECU features.

EMCS
EMCS is available for this car. EMCS is APR's revolutionary patent pending Enhanced Modular Chipping System. EMCS is an industry leading technology that brings many new features to the automotive enthusiast. This technology was developed exclusively by Audi Performance & Racing, LLC and demonstrates APR's continued commitment to lead the industry with the most technologically advanced products available.

Want chipped mode? Want to be able to switch back to your stock settings? Want a race mode to run 100 octane fuel at the track? How about a valet mode that limits power? EMCS is the lone technology on the market that can give you all of these options. No changing of the chip or ECU is required. These programs are available at the touch of a button.

APR has taken your cruise control buttons and utilized them for this function. Your cruise control will continue to function as normal, but will give you the ability to scroll through the programs you have purchased on your APR chipped ECU. The procedure is simple and involves only two steps.

Step 1: Press and hold the "set" button on your cruise control. After approximately five seconds, the "check engine" light on your dash will begin to blink once per second. This will tell you that you are activating program one. This blinking sequence will continue for approximately five seconds.

After this five second interval, the "check engine" light will begin blinking twice per second. This will indicate that you have activated the second program. This process is continued to access any remaining programs you may have purchased. (three blinks = program three, four blinks = program four).

Step 2: Once you have activated the desired program, simply release the "set" button. The "check engine" light will go off, and you will be locked in that program until you change it.

It's that simple.

APR's EMCS is a truly modular system that allows for future enhancements and features to be added as they are developed without the need for additional hardware. EMCS makes the following advanced features possible:

EMCS Circuit Board and

  1. Programmer End
  2. EMCS Home Programmer
  3. EMCS System

FlipSwitch
Enables you to swap between two or more engine programs on-the-fly using the cruise control stalk. All cars have stock and standard chipped program versions available. Valet, race-gas, and other specialty programs are available for some models.

Fault Code Erase/Throttle Body Alignment (FCE/TBA)
Fault Code Erase allows you to erase and reset engine related trouble codes without having to use a specialty tool. Throttle Body Alignment allows you to manually perform throttle-body adaptation.

Security Lockout
Prevents unauthorized personnel from accessing EMCS functions. The user may select any 1 to 4 digit security code. The security code is entered using the cruise control buttons.

User Reprogramming and Reconfiguration
Gives the user the ability to reprogram their ECU with the latest software updates and to reconfigure their ECU for different preferences or features. This function requires the optional programming adaptor.

Dyno proven performance increases across the powerband show that no loss of low end torque occurs and the entire area under the curve is raised to bring a smooth linear increase to red line. OEM tip fitment on most applications allows our clientele to select from a range of APR exhaust tip options or retain their OEM tips for stealth installation and even install other aftermarket exhaust tips to their liking.

Coupled with APR’s DME/ECU Recalibration the performance gains and drivability of your Porsche will truly coexist in a perfect harmony of esthetics and technology. APR’s strategy of engineering a full range of engine performance products for Porsche enthusiasts allows our engineering team to work “both ends” of the technologies related to engine hardware AND software, an opportunity rarely found.

APR offers both an exhaust manifold replacement (headers) and a catback exhaust section. The headers are designed to efficently move air from the combustion chamber to the factory turbochargers.

Our "LeMans" catback exhaust system for the 997 Turbo is designed to bolt directly to the factory turbochargers. The exhaust then continues with ultra high-flow, metal matrix catalysts. From there, the gases flow into a large, single rear muffler section. The quieted exhaust then exits the back of the car through the stock exhaust tips. This system is a fully polished, complete bolt on system.

Our free flowing exhaust system helps to generate more power and produce a gentle unobtrusive growl that enhances the mystique of a turbocharged Porsche® flat six.

The APR R1 diverter valve was designed to be the ultimate solution to the problem of unreliable factory and aftermarket diverter valves and to be the leader in performance. Although most are of good design, factory diverter valves are built in a very conscious manner and the materials and overall life and reliability suffer. For the performance enthusiast, the diverter valve is an important component whose proper operation is paramount to optimal engine operation.

Enter the R1: APR’s R1 diverter valve addresses all of the reliability problems of the factory-supplied diverter valves and aftermarket replacements and takes performance to the next level. The R1 is a diaphragm-based valve. A diaphragm is the best option for a diverter valve for several reasons. First off, a diaphragm has negligible friction. Piston-based valves have considerable friction from the piston, o-ring, and bore assembly. The lower friction R1 diaphragm equates to faster response and better overall performance. Secondly, diaphragms do not require the periodic greasing that piston-based valves do. Piston-based valves must be qreased periodically (usually every year or sooner), requiring removing the valve from the car, disassembling and reassembling the valve. The APR R1 was designed to be maintenance free for the life of the product. Thirdly, a diaphragm based valve will never have a stuck piston. Piston-based valves periodically incur stuck pistons (especially if the required maintenance schedules are not followed.) Due to the lack of a piston, the APR R1 solves this problem.

The R1 is designed for optimal performance. The main body of the valve is investment cast in an aluminum alloy. By utilizing this casting process in lieu of a more conventional machining process, APR was able to optimize the internal geometry of the valve to provide the ultimate in flow performance. This geometry cannot be created utilizing conventional machining. As such, the APR R1 has much better flow characteristics than other diverter valves. Combined with the low friction diaphragm assembly, this equates to a valve that is truly a performance leader.

The materials used in the R1 are standard setting. The diaphragm is created out of high temperature material and incorporates a Nomex fabric reinforcement layer for enhanced durability and a diaphragm that will never tear. The alloy main body is finish machined at APR and receives a multilayer corrosion resistant and cosmetic enhancing finish. All machining and final assembly takes place at APR headquarters in the United States for optimal quality control and consistency.
